For the first time patients rallied to confront the thousands of national, military and international dentists attending the annual meeting of the American Dental Association here in Philadelphia on Friday, October 8, 2005. Most dentists, walked past, their heads still in the sand. They refuse to believe that their national organization would allow them to continue to place a toxic material (mercury) in patients' mouths. They adhere to the doctrine espoused by the ADA that once combined with the other metals, these fillings which are 50% mercury (the second most toxic substance - plutonium being first - known to exist) become inert. Many dentists however were willing to listen and were intrigued to understand that the ADA is now telling dentists that the drain lines of their office buildings are extremely contaminated. This now supports information given to me about eight years ago by Carol Browner, then EPA director under Pres. Clinton, that dental offices, when sold, will be Toxic Waste Sites that need to be handled by authorized environmental firms ( http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/positions/statements/amalgam_plumbing_guidelines.pdf )
Let me see if I have this correct doctor: You can place mercury fillings in patients' heads, and your ADA tells you it's safe. But if you have scrap mercury filling material left over, doctor, be sure not to flush it down the drain, and, you'd be best storing it in a tightly sealed, glass jar, UNDER ANTI-FREEZE. Well I wouldn't even think about those consequences doctor, but look at all the patients gathered around, who want you to get your head out of the sand and start thinking!

The main intended impact of this protest was to convey to dentists that mercury is effecting the lives of patients. Many of the protesters were there because they had been diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis, Myesthenia Gravis, Bi-Polar disorder, and a myriad of auto-immune diseases with no firm diagnosis other than the fact that they had neurologic and connective tissue disorders. Speakers gave testimony to the fact that once their mercury fillings had been removed properly (there is a right and a wrong way to do it), their symptoms had disappeared.
This rally was organized by Freya Koss, a local out-spoken "survivor" of "toxic teeth". Her dramatic story can be read at: http://www.toxicteeth.org/forms/mainLineToday.pdf .
She did quite a job organizing and providing press coverage of the protest. The keynote speaker on Friday morning was Gen. Colin Powell. The thousands of dentists leaving his address around 9:30 had to walk right past us to get into the meeting hall. What tremendous planning!Remember the character "The Mad Hatter" from Alice in Wonderland? I met Norrie, a woman from Connecticut with Mad Hatter's Disease. In older times, mercury was used to treat the felt in hats. Norrie's website, chronicles her 16 years of hospitalizations for this bi-polar disorder, up to the discovery of her mercury poisoning, culminating with her psychiatrist clearing her as having returned to normal once her mercury fillings had been properly removed. Her story is compelling, and her website includes a great, two-part powerpoint to give many of the dentists whose heads are in the sand, the research they might require to alter their "stinking thinking". At 10:30, the "Truth March" moved to the City Council Chambers of Philadelphia City Hall, a magnificent edifice that was about six blocks from the protest march. The press conference was well-attended and hosted by Charles Brown, the executive director of Consumers for Dental Choice (and former Attorney General of West Virginia). There is a wealth of information available at their website http://www.toxicteeth.org .
There were many great speakers, the context of their talks will be included below. By far, the most exciting information for me was from Councilwoman at-large Blondell Reynolds Brown, who has introduced Bill 040904 to City Council. As a consequence of this bill's passage, dental offices in Philadelphia will be mandated to equip mercury separators to remove mercury from waste waters before they contaminate the sewer systems of the city further (for more information, check out the website of www.drna.com which makes the separator on my office). Mrs. Reynolds Brown's bill seeks to help consumers make informed decisions about the fillings being placed in their mouths, and their children's mouths. There will be a boilerplate form which dentists will be mandated to give to anyone who is having a mercury filling placed.
She stated that mercury in fillings is the "domain of children and low-income families." She seeks to get insurance cooperation to make lives healthier. She also fervently made the statement that the ADA must examine the gag rule which prevents dentists from entering into earnest discussions about mercury without fear of sanction. She also stated that she wanted the ADA to stop calling them "silver" fillings. "Use the M word," she exclaimed!
WHAT WAS ONCE A GOAL AS LOFTY AS THE CEILING OF COUNCIL'S CHAMBERS, OR THE HAT ATOP WILLIAM PENN'S HEAD ON CITY HALL MAY SOON BE A REALITY - WE MADE TREMENDOUS PROGRESS YESTERDAY!
Simultaneous with our rally, the American Academy of Pediatrics was meeting in Washington, DC and protesters were there, as well, to get thimerisol removed from vaccines. One good link about this is located at http://autismcoach.com/Rolling%20Stone%20Autism%20Article.htmDr. Richard Fisher stated that newborns get more mercury from mom's fillings giving off mercury vapor than from vaccines in the first 5 years of life. That dentists feel that having mercury in the human body, just inches from the brainstem is ludicrous. He listed many countries where mercury fillings have been banned, or where advisories have been issued against the use thereof. He stated that 75% of mercury waste in waterways originates from dental offices (our office recycled 4 POUNDS of mercury last year through our separators rather than spewing this waste out and becoming a bioburden).
Dr. Mark Geier - expert on mercury and autism from NIH and Hopkins - his book has led to six states banning thimerisol. Stated that only plutonium is more toxic in parts per million. Spoke about "mercurism" a condition that led to the dementia of Roman slaves working in Spanish mines. Stated that the problems with mercury in fish derives from dental offices; how else did the mercury get into the water?
Dr. David Geier - biochemist with expertise in mercury and heavy metal toxicity. Stated that researchers cannot show a half-life for mercury in neural tissue. Conclusion: the body cannot break down mercury and remove it.
Dr. Rashid Buttar - a physician from Charlotte, NC who treats autism, chronic illness, and mercury toxicity. He has a program for detoxifying children with autism. There is a 15 month waiting list to get into his program. He stated that when born, the child has no way to excrete Hg and immediately is given a Hepatitis B vaccine. Questioned why Hep B when Hep B only effects the sexually promiscuous, IV drug users, and medical workers. Two boosters are given again in the first year.
Arthur Stomalis - Pennsylvania Clean Air Council - was outraged that dentists continue to use amalgam. Stated that separators should be mandatory across the entire country. Pennsylvania's government plans to be a leader among states on this battle.

Great day in Philadelphia for the battle against mecury amalgam fillings. Cheers go out to Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown for taking up the torch by introducing her bill into City Council. Many thanks go out to those brave and dedicated dentists who are out there in the trenches. Keep the faith and we will prevail!
My name is Dr. Andrea Brockman. I practiced dentistry for almost 25 years in Philadelphia, PA. I got my undergraduate degree in Nursing and practiced for 6 years in medical-surgical, intensive care and geriatrics. When working in hospitals, we were prohibited from entering a room where there were mercury spills from sphygmomanometers or thermometers. Until the room was properly cleaned by specialized and protected people, the room was considered a hazardous site.
It was quite confusing to me to be in dental school and be in a student clinic of 300 dentists placing amalgams, spilling more mercury on the floor than 300 thermometers. My questions to instructors of why we were handling such a poisonous substance evoked anger and the same stock answer, "It gets locked into the filling and becomes inert." Well, even if that were true, it still made no sense to me at all that the dentists were squashing the excess mercury out of the amalgam in squeeze cloths and burning the caked on amalgam from condensing instruments. In those days, we didn't wear gloves or masks.
I never put two and two together that when I started working in the clinic that I ended up in the hospital with heart arrhythmias, started getting panic attacks, migraine headaches and later that year a miscarriage. I was a previously healthy 25 year old and attributed my new problems to the stress of being in dental school.
Composite resins were just coming out for anterior teeth and were not strong enough for posterior teeth. Our materials were limited to amalgams or gold foils for direct restorations. We were taught to place pins in teeth for larger restorations and polish amalgams for greater longevity. Each time we placed, polished and drilled out old amalgams, the dentist and everyone else in the room was exposed to mercury vapor. I couldn't tell you how many micrograms of mercury were coming out of fillings, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that dental personnel are being exposed to dangerous amounts.
Every business that uses mercury has specific procedures coming down from OSHA for protection of employees and the EPA for protection of the environment. There have never been any guidelines for protection of dental workers nor for the protection of the water where tons of mercury from excess amalgam from newly placed fillings and drilled out fillings go into the suction system directly into the water. I've heard the statistics that 60% of the mercury at the water treatment plants is coming from dental offices.
In the earlier years of my practice when I was pregnant and placing and removing amalgams without any masks or gloves, I became very concerned that I was now also exposing my unborn child to mercury vapor. There was nothing I could find in the literature (there was no internet then) that gave me any statistics on fetal exposure to mercury vapor in dental personnel. I thought that if anyone had that information, it would certainly be the American Dental Association. I believed that their interests would be to protect its members.
I called the ADA and spoke with several scientists and respectfully acknowledged their position that mercury gets locked into the filling. My question to them was, "I'm a female dentist and I'm pregnant. I've already had one miscarriage and it has taken me several years to become pregnant again. I drill out hundreds of amalgams a week. Could you tell me what my exposure is to the mercury vapor created by the aerosol of drilling? And how is this affecting my baby?" The answer I got was, "I'll get back to you." That was 25 years ago and I'm still waiting.
I had a difficult delivery and had a son that was hyperactive, asthmatic, a bet wetter, suffers from chronic sinus and digestive problems, periods of depression, difficulty focusing and impulsive behavior. The gamut of doctors treated his symptoms but the problems were never corrected. It was not until he was in his late teens that I had him tested for mercury. Provoked urine challenge test showed that he was loaded with mercury and there was no other possible place he could have been exposed other than from me in utero or through my breast milk.
I was also tested and showed large amounts of mercury on provoked urine challenge tests. The science that the ADA produces has not definitively proven that the mercury in amalgam is not linked to any illness. They continue to espouse that the amount that escapes from the filling is so minute that it is insignificant.
Cigarettes are a contributing factor in lung cancer and heart disease, but are not the total cause. There are always other factors. Cigarettes do, however, present a risk and should be avoided for optimum health. That doesn't mean that a person who gives up smoking or who doesn't smoke will never get sick. In the case of amalgams, it is prudent never to have them placed in the first place. In the case of a healthy person, if removed safely (precautions should be taken like asbestos removal), it is a positive health choice. If a person's health is already compromised, it is very important to have mercury amalgams removed, but only if proper precautions and strict protocols are followed. Otherwise, the person can be exposed to more mercury and can deteriorate.
As far as dental personnel are concerned, they need to wake up and start doing their own research and not taking the word of the ADA that there is no scientific proof that amalgam is dangerous. Every dentist should obtain the government's "Toxicological Profile of Mercury" available from the Department of Commerce through the Freedom of Information Act.
We should demand tests for ourselves and our employees and gather true health statistics. Dentists are at risk and putting their families at risk. Even if amalgams are deemed safe, dentists are putting their patients at risk from placing and drilling out fillings. Hygienists are risking exposure for themselves and their patients from polishing amalgams. The amount of vapor released from the heat of friction of a prophy cup can be measured with a Jerome Mercury Vapor Analyzer. Dentists are putting people, animals, and fish, if not the entire food chain at risk by not separating out the mercury in the suction system before it leaves the office and goes into the water supply.
Forget the debate that amalgams are dangerous for patients. I believe that if dentists are not protecting themselves they are hiding their heads in the sand. Irritability is one of the symptoms of mercury toxicity. Perhaps the anger expressed by the dentists over this issue is not only a need to defend a long trusted belief, but a reaction triggered by the mercury in their own systems.
Dr. Markus, thanks for posting the pictures and the insightful commentary. I posted a few pictures and opined about my experiences there at ADA & Mercury Amalgams; The Protest Demonstration in Philadelphia.
Btw, a minor technicality, but the reason your blog entry section is showing up below the "about you" section is because of the width of your first link to the ada.org's amalgam plumbing guidelines PDF.
Instead of showing the complete address, just highlight the text you want to make linkable, click the link button in the toolbar of the Blogger New/Edit Post interface, and then paste in the long URL address to the pop-up window. It's actually quite easy and very handy.
Hope that helps!
Andrea: Great post. You know there's been a bit of discussion about suicide and dentists. There was a guy in my class who took a flight without an elevator from his apartment balcony.
The truth is, however, that with cigarettes, the individual has the choice of smoking or not, he knows about the toxins he's inhaling. The truth of mercury fillings will be out soon.
I wrote the author of the article from the inquirer and chastised her for missing a Pulitzer Possibility. Freya, who organized the event, a local out-spoken "survivor" of "toxic teeth" and President of the PA Coalition for Mercury-Free Dentistry, and whose website is http://www.sayNOmercury.org. got an apology from the author of the article:
Hi Steve,
I spoke to the reporter, Rory Sweeney. He wasn't at the event, neither the rally nor the press conference. He relied on Sunny Hu, a reporter from China who knew nothing about the issue, and apparently wasn't interested in interviewing the scientists.
It was irresponsible of Rory to allow his name to be used without reviewing the press kit with the bios and speaches of the doctors and scientists. He said it was a last minute thought to cover the rally because it was the "news of the day". They had no intention of covering the press conference with regard to the subject matter and the science presented.
I spent an hour on the phone with him yesterday. In fact, I offered to bring the Jerome Analyzer to the Phila Inquirer office and test the staff's mercury vapor. We'll see if they go for it..........I'll keep you updated.
I'm working on the Inquirer to write an investigational article, to make up for the ridiculous article they printed. If that doesn't work, I'll go to the Bulletin and see if they'll write the article.
There is alot of Blogs, I never guessed I'd find some usefull information.
Thanks.
I'll be back later to see if anymore good updates are available.
WOW! What a great site you have here. I found it from my search for autoimmune illness and it's a cut above the others. Even though my research lead me here and the revelance may not be exact, your content is very beneficial and rewarding. Here's some of me results regarding autoimmune illness
Good content. Thanks for the information.
Hey nice blog.
Wow I have been searching all day and finaly some information I can use. Thanks
